Immigration And Imagination

Raise your hand if you are an immigrant or come from a family or ancestry of immigrants?  Unless you are of pure Native American ancestry (in the US), your hand should be up. Most of us did not originate in the US, even if your immigration was involuntary, as some of my ancestors.

Can you imagine what our country would be if immigration was prohibited 50+ years ago? Our individual life experiences, country population, and our world would look very different.  What if we made it a more simple, less time consuming, process?  Look, I know a process is necessary for an agreeable solution, but we need one that is not based on fear.

I am not into politics, and I NEVER watch the news.  I hold negativity at bay in my life. But, there are some things I learn about that make me think about my contribution. How can I contribute to making our world a better place?

For me… opining about negativity is not helpful to our global psyche.  So I want to play with our collective imagination…

What if we remember that people who are immigrating are people? Who, should be treated with the care and respect they deserve?

What if we asked those immigrating to tell us what they think? What if we asked them about ideas for a solution? In my 20+ years in corporate Human Resources, I’ve learned a few things. Particularly that people who are allowed to be part of a decision process, take more ownership and are more likely to cooperate.

What if we treated those of us who are immigrating like the intelligent people they are?  Why do we think smart people won’t figure out how to get around the building of walls?  What if we used the “wall money” to create an immigration infrastructure of respect, support, and ease.  The more difficult it is, the more resistant people will be, the more the process will be avoided.

What if we operated from a position of love versus fear?  What are we afraid of anyway?  We live in a friendly Universe that provides for us all.  There is more than enough for everyone.  Just think about all the food we waste, buildings we tear down, cars we junk. and more!

Let’s not separate let’s collaborate.  Let’s do our part to focus on solution speak. Lets not spread the negative goings on like peanut butter on warm toast!

Immigration is a very complex, sensitive, layered and political issue.  I get that, but would still challenge… with a little imagination, compromise, collaboration, and (dare I say) love, we can create a solution that works for all.
